In times of crisis and adversity, acts of kindness and compassion show us beacons of hope to be resilient and move forward. The devastating earthquake of 2015 and the COVID-19 pandemic were the challenges that tested the resilience of communities in Nepal. Amidst these difficulties, we were fortunate to serve our community, our people, and humanity as a whole. Together, we, our members and volunteers, launched various initiatives and programs through our collective action and extended our helping hand during times of crisis.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many daily-wage workers in Nepal faced financial hardship due to lockdowns. To help those in need, Peace for People donated 10 sacks of rice and 1 sack of lentils to the Koteshwar Youth Reform Club. This food relief program provided meals to around 1,000 people, ensuring their well-being during challenging times.
We launched a Social Media Campaign during the pandemic to spread positivity. Members shared their experiences and opinions about COVID-19’s impact on society through videos on Facebook and Instagram. We emphasized the importance of optimism, self-care, and avoiding fake news. These videos, including COVID-19 do’s and don’ts, reached 50,000 people nationwide.
Even amidst the pandemic, we continued our educational support program by donating masks and hand sanitizers to more than 300 students and 30 teachers from different schools in the Dhading district.
Kalu Shrestha, a resident of Bhaktapur, was a fire victim who lost his house in 2009. Peace for People provided financial aid to Mr. Shrestha under the Natural Disaster Fund Project in August 2009.
An 18-year-old young boy, Sunil Majhi, living in Chandranagar Village Municipality (Sarlahi), is completely disabled. He has difficulties in his regular activities. He had not attended school until Peace for People provided him with a wheelchair to fulfil his desire to go to school during the academic session of 2020.
Peace for People is always eager to serve the needy in the best way possible. Thus, PfP provided a wheelchair for Ganesh Maya Khadgi, a 70-year-old resident of Marudhoka-01, Kathmandu, who was suffering from paralysis in March 2021.
The devastating earthquake of 2015 severely affected thousands of families in different parts of Nepal. The disaster left them with no food or shelter for days. Peace for People donated 1 sack of rice and 1 tent each to 200 affected families in Thakre Rural Municipality and Galchi Rural Municipality in May 2015.
This disaster also badly affected the education sector of the entire nation. Shree Janata Primary School (Dhading), Shree Kaule Primary School (Dhading), Shree Setidevi Lower Secondary School (Dhading), and Shree Bhumesthan Primary School (Kavre) were in the destruction phase post-earthquake. Peace for People donated GC sheets to these 4 schools to construct Temporary Learning Centers.
Additionally, P4P supported earthquake-victim students of Shree Janata Primary School (Dhading) and Mahendra Shanti Secondary School (Kavre) with educational materials in 2015.
Moreover, P4P organized a one-day free health camp in Kavre district targeting the earthquake victims in June 2015.
Dipak Subedi, a resident of Thakre Rural Municipality-08, Dhading, had to bear the total damage to his house due to the earthquake. P4P provided financial aid to Mr. Subedi during that tough time with a motive to ease to his situation to some extent.
As we reflect on these acts of humanity, let us acknowledge the strength and resilience of the human spirit. Their selfless actions have inspired us all to work together, support each other, and build a more compassionate and inclusive society. Let us continue to strive for a brighter future where kindness, empathy, and solidarity prevail, ensuring a better world for generations to come.
Peace for People visions to develop an environment in which communities in Nepal are ensured their right to quality education, and equal opportunities in socio-economic sectors leading to active citizenship and productive and prosperous society.
